To gain a place on this course you need to regularly come onto professional contact with children/adults on the Autism Spectrum.

The purpose of this course

Support organisations and their staff to develop a thorough understanding of the Autism Spectrum.
Gain valuable continuing professional development.
Reflect on their own practice.
Provide a forum for the sharing of experience and good practice.
Develop innovative practices through an increased understanding of how autism impacts on peoples lives.

The key content

Exploring the term Autism Spectrum
Developing an understanding of the barriers to social communication and how to be a successful communication partner.
Developing an understanding of social and emotional cognition in Autism and how to support differences in development.
Exploring the personal, sensory, physical and mental health issues associated with Autism and engaging and motivating involvement in the community.
Implications of the Autism Spectrum leading to good practice in achieving positive outcomes for children/adults.
The behavioural difficulties/differences associated with Autism and how they might be managed or taught to self-manage.
Explore the concept of inclusion in relation to individuals with Autism:
- Do they wish to be included?
- How does the environment impact on the individual?
- The need for life experiences
Investigating strategies to plan an appropriate individualised programme/person-centred plan and a good quality of life for a person with Autism.
Develop an understanding of the world from the perspective of a person with Autism.

Demonstrate an understanding of the range and variation of the Autism Spectrum.
Consider and discuss barriers to social communication in Autism.
Demonstrate an understanding of social and emotional cognition in Autism.
Consider the personal, sensory, physical and mental health issues associated with Autism
Identify good practice in teaching and learning for people with Autism
Demonstrate an understanding of the behavioural difficulties associated with the Autism Spectrum and how they might be managed
Consider the concept of inclusion in relation to individuals with Autism.
Develop skills to use strategies to plan an appropriate individualised programme/person-centred plan with an individual and ensure a good quality of life or transition.
