Westfield, Sunderland, Tyne and Wear

Westfield is a hall of residence offering places to learners with Asperger Syndrome and related difficulties who are attending Tasker. It is not a Care Home as students do not require personal care. The service is registered with Sunderland City Council as a House of Multiple Occupation. All learners have their own room and share other facilities such as kitchens, lounges and bathrooms. Within Westfield there is also one self contained 2 person flat.
Learners are given appropriate levels of support from highly trained, experienced and dedicated support workers to encourage maximum independence but at the same time address the difficulties that learners may experience as a result of their Asperger Syndrome.

A 24-hour autism specific curriculum ensures consistency and provides the structure required to enable learners to develop practical and meaningful skills. The first and second year of the curriculum focuses on ‘Home Skills’ and ‘Independence Skills’ such as meal preparation and ‘Out and About in the Community’. In the third year the curriculum is designed to prepare the learner for transition and concentrates on areas such as ‘Cooking for One’ and ‘Money Management’.

Each week learners budget for and purchase their own food at local shops and supermarkets, buy their own personal items such as clothes and manage their own benefits with varying levels of support. Progressively learners are encouraged to take charge of their own life and make their own decisions.
