Tasker, Sunderland, Tyne and Wear

Tasker offers specialist education places to people with Asperger Syndrome and associated difficulties including mental health problems. Twenty of the places available are residential and learners reside at Westfield Hall of Residence where a 24-hour curriculum is in place.

Learners at Tasker follow ESPA’s Curriculum, in particular preparation for community independent supported living, This will equip them with the necessary skills to enjoy a more comfortable, confident and independent adult life. Strong links are established with Newcastle College, Houghall College and the City of Sunderland College.

Up to a three-year programme of study is structured to enable learners to follow a social skills based programme in their first year. The second year focuses increasingly on attending Sector College and vocational courses. In the third year of the programme a vocational / academic route is developed as appropriate to the individual, this may include work experience if suitable. In the final year it is crucial that all relevant agencies are involved in transition planning to ensure that needs are met appropriately in the next placement.

Learners at Tasker have regular access to a local Connexions Personal Advisor who is available to give careers/course advice and guidance and to support work experience opportunities.

Tasker offers its learners a comprehensive leisure skills programme with maximum opportunity to access the wider local community. Where any activity poses a particular risk to the learner, a thorough risk assessment is carried out.
