Since opening in 1992, E.S.P.A College has provided many successful educational experiences for students with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). All of our students follow ESPA’s Curriculum – a programme of study and support specifically designed to meet the academic, social and emotional needs of young adults with ASD. Alongside this, individually tailored study programmes are developed and based on the needs, interests and talents of students in preparation for their future lives. Every student has an Individual Learning Plan specific to their needs, detailing learning style and educational targets that is used to inform their learning.
Some students are likely to experience associated difficulties such as dyslexia and mental health problems like depression; ESPA is able to provide appropriate support through the expertise of a range of specialists including a Consultant Psychiatrist, Psychologist, and Speech & Language Therapist. Every student will have access to these services (and others) if appropriate to their individual needs.
The range of teaching is both imaginative and insightful ensuring that the effects of ASD on the individual can be addressed. When educational targets and environments are chosen, the student’s age, ability level and learning style are always considered. Within the college we believe that it is imperative for educational targets to be attainable and purposeful. With this in mind the ESPA Curriculum focuses on developing a repertoire of skills needed to function productively in society and to promote skills for life, well being and work.
Additionally the college acknowledges the importance of a wide-ranging menu of programmes and opportunity. Over several years ESPA has established strong links with various sector colleges, local communities and voluntary employment providers. Many students have benefited from the broad range of vocational, social and academic opportunities they can offer.
Currently most educational placements last three years and can be either a day or residential placement. Funding is acquired through The Learning &Skills Council.
The College is inspected every four years by the Office for Standards in Education (OFSTED). Ashleigh is also inspected by The Commission for Social Care Inspection ( CSCI ).
